Sacramento traffic school: permission, deadlines and court records
Start with Sacramento Superior Court’s instructions for your citation. Save its traffic-school agreement, keep the required dates separate and follow up if completion is missing from your record. This guide covers ordinary adult traffic infractions; the court controls your case.
Get court permission and save the Agreement
Check the court named on your citation or notice. Use Sacramento’s official Public Case Access System for your case documents and available options. If the traffic-school option is missing or the instructions are unclear, contact the court before choosing a school. Paying a provider does not establish permission. California Courts sign-up guidance.
Sacramento allows a traffic-school request on or before the ticket’s due date. After the request is processed, find your Agreement to Attend Traffic Violator School in the case portal and save its instructions and assigned date. A submitted request is not confirmation of approval. Court request instructions.
Separate court charges from school tuition
As reviewed October 25, 2026, Sacramento lists a nonrefundable $52 administrative fee plus full bail and any required correction fees. The school charges separately. Check the court’s actual total; do not add a fee again if it is already included. Published court charges · Court-versus-school cost guide.
Identify each requirement and its due date
The school section describes payment within 90 days of approval. The FAQ requires payment and completion by the Agreement’s due date. Use the dates in your own court record; do not calculate a new deadline from this guide. The original ticket action date remains a separate requirement. Payment instructions · Agreement requirements.
Sacramento’s FAQ says no extensions or partial payments under the traffic-school agreement. If you cannot meet a requirement, contact the court promptly before it is due. Do not assume a pending request changes a date, or that additional payment time would also change school completion. Court deadline guidance.
| Requirement | Assigned date | Court-confirmed change, if any |
|---|---|---|
| Act on the ticket or appear as ordered | ______ | ______ |
| Pay required court charges | ______ | ______ |
| Complete traffic school | ______ | ______ |
Check what the ordinary payment option means
The ordinary monthly-payment option is separate from traffic school. Sacramento says choosing ordinary payment or monthly payments forfeits bail, reports a conviction and ends the option to contest; signing up for monthly payments also makes the case ineligible for school. Read the consequences before choosing an option. This guide does not recommend a plea or payment choice. Ordinary payment-plan consequences.
Use the hardship route for the right stage
If you are requesting school for the first time: Sacramento’s Ability to Pay application is not the way to request traffic school. That page also excludes requests to contest the ticket, provide correction proof, address a mandatory-appearance offense, or change a case already assigned to community service. Ask the court which procedure fits your situation. When the hardship application can be used.
If the court has already approved school: the same page says to submit a hardship application at least 10 calendar days before the due date. It provides online and paper routes, a stated review period of up to 30 days, and decision notices by email or mail. These are the court’s published instructions as reviewed October 25, 2026; filing does not confirm extra time, a reduction, an installment plan or continued school permission. Ask how any decision affects your Agreement. Instructions for an already-approved case.
Read the plea consequences first. For active or failure-to-appear cases, Sacramento says the application requires a guilty or no-contest plea and that the option to appear in court ends once the plea is accepted. Review the instructions before submitting; seek advice about your rights if you are unsure. Application and plea consequences.
Ask the court about eligibility exceptions
Have the court apply the rules to your case. Statewide rule 4.104 distinguishes routine clerk permission from a judicial officer’s discretion. For example, alleged speed more than 25 mph over the limit is outside routine clerk authority; that does not promise approval by a judge. Prior school election, point count, alcohol or drug charges, missed appearances and commercial-vehicle charges can change the process.
If you are otherwise eligible, pleading not guilty or exercising your right to trial does not by itself make you ineligible for traffic school. The court considers the circumstances of your case; approval is not guaranteed. This eligibility rule is separate from the plea requirements of Sacramento’s hardship application. Rule 4.104(c)(2).
The statewide 18-month rule compares the previous and current violation dates and includes having attended or elected to attend for the earlier violation. Sacramento’s page uses sign-up wording. If a prior ticket is close to that interval, ask the court to confirm it; do not count from course completion or use this guide as an eligibility calculator. Statewide eligibility rule · Local eligibility instructions.
A commercial license and a commercial vehicle are different. A commercial-license holder cited in a qualifying personal vehicle may request school, but the conviction is not confidential for insurance purposes. For a violation in a commercial vehicle, rule 4.104(c)(1) prohibits using school instead of adjudicating the offense, to obtain a confidential conviction, or to avoid violator point counts. The local FAQ directs commercial-license holders to DMV’s Mandatory Actions Unit for point follow-up; point treatment is not the same as hiding a conviction. Commercial-license rule · Local record follow-up.
Choose a licensed school and follow up on the record
After court permission, use DMV’s traffic-school list to check a provider’s license, course format and language. Confirm the complete price, current enrollment and reporting availability with that school. A directory listing does not enroll you or decide eligibility. How to verify a school.
Sacramento says completion certificates are sent electronically to the court. Electronic completion instructions. Keep your completion evidence and court payment record. Completing the course, sending the record and the court crediting it are different steps. Use the official case portal to review your documents; an unexplained status label is not proof that the court accepted a certificate. Court completion guidance.
If a point remains or receipt is unclear, ask the school to check the name, birth date, citation number and case number on its submission. Sacramento says the school may resubmit after checking those details. Ask Traffic Court about other unresolved problems and whether your completion was credited. No posting time or insurance result is promised here. School and court follow-up.
