Los Angeles traffic school: keep permission, deadlines and court receipt separate
Official public guidance checked October 25, 2026. Follow the court’s instructions and dates for your own case. This page does not determine eligibility or verify a case.
Start with the court on your citation
Use the courthouse assigned to your citation, rather than your home address. LA’s current lookup guidance says you must act by the given due date even if you did not receive a courtesy notice or cannot find the ticket online. If the ticket is missing online, the court directs you to contact the issuing agency; if it is still missing after that, go to the courthouse on your ticket by its due date. Current ticket lookup guidance
Confirm permission, court charges and the completion date
Check the court notice and ask the court if you are unsure whether you may attend traffic school. Paying a school does not establish court permission. The current LA school page lists a nonrefundable $64 court processing fee in addition to the bail amount, and describes a 60-day school-completion period. Confirm the amounts and the exact completion date assigned to your case; do not calculate a deadline from this page or assume when that period starts. The school’s tuition is separate from court charges. LA traffic-school guidance, California Courts sign-up guidance
Identify the deadline you need to change
Keep appearance, fine-payment and school-completion dates separate. The court’s CourtHelp announcement lists different requests for these dates, available according to eligibility. A change to one is not proof that the others changed. Copy the court’s actual dates into your own notes. CourtHelp traffic services, August 17, 2026

Request the right extension and retain its confirmation
LA’s current school page says you may request one 90-day school-completion extension. It also says the online option will not appear if you are ineligible. The general extension page describes an extension request before the due date has passed and a one-time 90-day online extension for eligible citations; further extensions are not available online through that option. It directs people needing more time to the Traffic Call Center, (213) 633-6300, for information. These statements do not grant an extension in your case. If the needed option is missing, contact the court about how to proceed. Save any approval or confirmation, identify which deadline changed, and record the new date. A pending or unfinished request is not an approved extension. Do not assume that a payment extension also extends school completion.
Ask about payment help and school together
LA’s current hardship page says the court may consider a reduction, more time, a payment plan or community service for qualifying people. It expressly says traffic school is not available through its online Ability to Pay Tool program. To submit an ability-to-pay petition and request school, it directs you to submit the petition in person at the courthouse on the citation. Confirm visit or appointment arrangements with that court before going. Current LA hardship instructions
California Courts’ general MyCitations guidance makes school availability conditional on the court and says to address school before proceeding with a fine-reduction request. Do not assume that a payment plan, fine-reduction request and traffic-school request are interchangeable or automatically combined. Statewide MyCitations guidance
Confirm the court received the certificate
School permission, course completion, transmission and court receipt are different events. LA’s current school page says the school sends the certificate electronically to the DMV and the court downloads it. It recommends checking with the court at least a week after completion. That is a recommended check, not a guaranteed processing time or permission to miss the deadline.
The same page warns that if you sign up for school and the court does not receive the certificate by the due date, the case will close and a conviction will appear on your driving record. Ask the school about transmission and the court about receipt for the correct case. Do not treat an unexplained portal label as proof of receipt or dismissal. Current completion and receipt instructions
Start at the official LA traffic page. It offers CourtHelp and the court’s ticket-lookup routes; available actions depend on eligibility. Enter case details only in the court’s service. This private school cannot grant extensions or check a court case here. Enrollment, payments and official reporting remain closed; the free preview gives no court credit. The prepared course and exam are in English.
