San Diego traffic school: requests, deadlines and court receipt
Start with the court handling your citation. Confirm permission, save the completion date it assigns and match the school’s record to the right court division. This guide covers ordinary adult traffic infractions; follow the court’s specific instructions for juvenile cases, a mandatory appearance or a contested case.
Confirm the request with your filing court
Use the court location on your citation or reminder notice. The appear-by date is a deadline to take action, not an automatically scheduled hearing. A missing reminder notice does not remove that deadline. Start with the San Diego traffic division or its official Traffic Portal.
Confirm eligibility and the court’s acceptance of your traffic-school request before enrolling. The school instructions offer online, mail, express-drop-box, telephone and business-office request channels. They estimate three to six weeks for a mail or drop-box response. Contact the filing court if your deadline is approaching or the school option is missing; sending a request is not proof of approval.
Separate the court amount from school tuition
San Diego’s FAQ, question 11, describes the court’s school-option amount as total bail plus $52. Provider tuition is separate. Use the total on your current notice or court record; do not add the $52 again if it is already included.
The court also says a vendor service fee of 2.75% may apply to the listed card and mobile payment methods from July 1, 2026. Check the amount shown before paying. An installment arrangement can have a separate transaction fee, described below. Current vendor-fee notice · School-versus-court cost guide
Keep three different deadlines separate
School completion: San Diego’s school instructions describe a one-time 90-day continuance. Save the date actually assigned by the court; do not calculate it from the citation, mailing or payment date using this guide. The school must still be completed within the period given when court fees are paid in installments. School deadline instructions
Appearance date: for eligible citations, the court may grant one 30-day extension requested on or before the existing appearance date. The page says no further appearance extension will be given at its end. This does not establish extra time to finish school. Appearance-date extension
Existing payment date: a separate procedure allows up to two 30-day payment extensions without appearing before a judicial officer. Further requests require a court appointment. A payment extension does not itself change a school-completion date. Payment-date options
If you need more time to finish school, ask the filing court before the assigned deadline. The reviewed current pages do not establish a general additional-school-extension procedure. Keep the court’s decision; do not assume a request extends time.
Use the code for the division where the ticket was filed
San Diego publishes four traffic-school court codes. Confirm the filing division on your notice, rather than choosing by where you live:
- Central Traffic (Kearny Mesa): 37480
- East County: 37440
- North County: 37465
- South County: 37485
The school needs matching name, date of birth, driver-license number, case or citation number and court code. Incorrect details may prevent completion from being credited. Provide those details only through the school’s authorized enrollment process and the court’s official channels; this guide collects none. Required details and court codes
Distinguish school completion from court receipt
San Diego’s school page says schools electronically notify the court for California-license drivers. Paper certificates are limited to drivers with out-of-state licenses, who are responsible for notifying the court with the signed original. Official completion instructions
Use the official Traffic Portal for current case information. The reviewed public instructions do not identify a completion-received status label or guarantee a posting interval. If receipt is unclear, ask the school to verify the submitted details and ask the filing court whether the record has been credited. A school receipt alone does not prove court posting. Understand the reporting stages
San Diego’s FAQ states that completing traffic school does not dismiss the violation. Record treatment depends on the applicable requirements; no insurance outcome is promised. FAQ, question 9
Review payment help before choosing an agreement or plea
For eligible infraction installment arrangements without a hardship showing, San Diego describes at least 10% initially and monthly payments of at least $35. Traffic-school cases carry a $35 transaction fee. These arrangements do not extend the school deadline. Installment conditions
If you cannot afford the amount, the court describes hardship requests for reduction, payment arrangements or community service, including MyCitations for eligible cases. Existing payment orders or agreements stay in effect until the court rules. If a fine has not yet been imposed, a guilty or no-contest plea may be required before the request is reviewed. Read the local payment-help instructions and our statewide request-order, plea and fix-it warnings before proceeding. No reduction or relief is automatic.
Ask the court when instructions do not fit your case
Missing school option: do not let this private guide decide eligibility. A June 9, 2025 court notice described omitted eligibility for some California licenses expiring in 2030 and gave court-confirmation steps. That dated notice does not establish a continuing system problem or eligibility for your case. If you already paid without requesting school, ask what procedure applies.
Combined fix-it and moving violations: the general ticket page mentions submitting a school certificate with proof of correction, while the school page distinguishes electronic California reporting from out-of-state paper originals. Confirm the required documents with the filing court instead of assuming every California driver must mail a certificate. The ticket page says signed-off corrections are due by the appearance date; do not wait for the school deadline. Traffic school does not replace a required correction.
Contact the division on your notice
Use the current traffic office directory for addresses, hours and telephone numbers. Courtroom appointments are required; a visit to a business office is a different process. Follow your court’s instructions for mandatory appearances, juvenile matters, contested cases or collections.
